Most people come by fast boat. They leave from Padang Bai, Amed and (in peak season) Serangan, and run straight to Gili Air. Times and prices vary by operator and season. Prefer to fly? Hop to Lombok (LOP) instead. We always suggest a morning boat: the sea is calmer and afternoon crossings can be bumpy.
Lombok's international airport is at Praya. From there it's about two hours by car to the coast, then a 20-minute boat to Gili Air. Boats run between Gili Air, Meno and Trawangan all day, and the Bali fast boats stop at Air and Trawangan too. This is what makes the base-camp idea work: hop over to another island for the afternoon and be home by dark. Ask us and we'll sort the boat.
